Sue Smith and Jonathan England are set to appeal against the penalties they were handed over the running and riding of Emral Silk at Southwell on Monday.

Grand National-winning trainer Smith was fined 3,000 and England banned for 18 days after the stewards found Emral Silk had not achieved his best possible placing in the 32Red.com ‘National Hunt’ Novices’ Hurdle.

Paul Struthers, chief executive of the Professional Jockeys Association, reports the pair will contest the decision.

He tweeted: “I can confirm that Sue Smith and Jonathan England are appealing the decision from Southwell on Monday.”
