Ron the Greek, second most recently to Mucho Macho Man in the Sunshine Millions Classic at Gulfstream Park, is being pointed to the Santa Anita Handicap (G1), according to trainer Bill Mott. The $750,000 race, slated for March 3, carries a purse of $750,000. Mott also added that Jose Lezcano will ride.

“We’ll know a ship date as soon as we can arrange for a plane,” said Mott from his South Florida winter base earlier this week.

A 5-year-old Florida-bred son of Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds stallion Full Mandate, Ron the Greek is owned by the Brous Stable, Wachtel Stable and Jack T. Hammer. Ron the Greek has a 5-3-1 record from 16 starts with earnings of $319,665.

Ron the Greek captured back-to-back races at Aqueduct, including the Queen’s County Stakes on Dec. 10, to close out his 2011 season. He was game in defeat in the Sunshine Millions at Gulfstream in late January, closing fast late under Lezcano in that $400,000 test at 1 1/8 miles.

Also under consideration for the Big ‘Cap: Boxeur des Rues, Mario Gutierrez; Game On Dude, Chantal Sutherland; Gladding, no rider; Holladay Road, no rider; Setsuko, Victor Espinoza; Twice the Appeal, Christian Santiago Reyes; and Ultimate Eagle, Martin Pedroza.
