Joel – I believe Orb has a big chance to win the Preakness. The only horse I believe has a chance to upset him is Departing. Departing was very wide in the Illinois Derby and still won going away. He is clearly an improving colt and rested and should test Orb. It will take an A+ effort by Departing to pull it off, Orb looks special, a real TC threat, just what horse racing needs now, a TC winner. Here’s my top 5 going into the Preakness 1. Orb 2. Departing 3. Normandy Invasion 4. Mylute 5 Will Take Charge. People forget that Will Take Charge beat Oxbow in the Rebel Stakes, he is a serious contender in the Preakness to hit the board. Lukas believes that in the Derby that Will Take Charge ran into traffic problems caused by the backing up Verrazano in the Stretch that comprimised his chances to hit the board in the Derby. this is a big colt with giant strides, and he is fresh, having that 7 week layoff leading into the derby. I will be boxing the Orb/Departing exacta. My trifecta will assume Departing no worse than 3rd, with Orb winning or coming in second behind Departing, with the other 3 mentioned above filling out the other slot.

Joe, very astute commentary as usual! Departing has obviously improved with some seasoning, and I think it’s reasonable to think the addition of Lasix hasn’t hurt either as the competition gets more stressful. The La. Derby is now looking like a key race of sorts when you consider what Palace Malice, Departing, Revolutionary, Mylute, etc. have come back to do in their next respective starts. Not as bad of a race as many experts tried to make it out to be, so we know his class is solid even though he only won the Ill. Derby last out. I do agree he could easily be on the board in the Preakness.

Shug McGaughey needs to send a thank you card to D. Wayne Lukas for adding Titletown Five to the Preakness fray IMO… he will almost certainly assure a good pace up front along with Goldencents, which should allow Orb to run is race without worry of the speed getting away from him, in theory. I do agree that Will Take Charge jumped out to me on the TV monitor the first time I watched the replay…he was moving in tandem with Orb until he got stopped, and once a big, long-striding colt like him gets stopped it’s over for him..he cannot restart fast enough to get to top flight because he’s not a turn-of-foot type. So I do give a relatively fresh Will Take Charge a chance in the Preakness if he’s afforded a better trip…he may actually be Orb’s biggest threat. I am personally not a big fan of the rest of the Derby horses coming back in 2 weeks…if they couldn’t beat Orb last Saturday then I can’t find a good reason why they would do so in Baltimore, unless Goldencents some how shakes loose and that track makes him hard to reel in.

At 2:39 mark, he suggests to go watch head on of Golden Soul replay. Where do you find replays of the horses in the runs? I’d like to see Will Take Charge. He’s my preakness pick.
