The sale's top two prices, a $500,000 Street Sense colt and a $430,000 Tapit colt, came in the final session as the sale finished with a decline in gross, thanks to slightly fewer horses sold, but a relatively steady average and gain in the median to wrap up what has been a solid season. Sparkman: Tapping the well

DRF | 7 years ago
The only thing missing from the burgeoning resume of three-time leading American sire Tapit is a reputation as a sire of sires. At 16 years old, the son of Pulpit has not yet had many opportunities to prove himself on that score, but with more than 30 sons currently at stud, it is highly likely that his eventual success in that sphere is more or less inevitable. Sparkman: Unbridled’s Song in the hunt for pair of sire titles

DRF | 7 years ago
If Arrogate continues his dominant parade through his principal remaining targets of 2017 he could easily earn $18 million to $20 million this year. With $7 million already in the bank and the $6 million first prize for the Dubai World Cup and about $3.5 million for another Breeders’ Cup Classic likely at his mercy, only a few more $1 million prep races would be required for him to earn more in one year than any horse in Thoroughbred history has earned in a career. Sparkman: Tapit and War Front rule Keeneland

DRF | 8 years ago
The natural order of the Thoroughbred marketplace dictates that leading sires become leading commercial sires. Buyers at yearling sales, first and foremost, are looking for top racehorses, and sires at or near the top of the General Sire List have proven their ability to produce those horses. The biggest buyers, however, also are looking for top racehorses with what are loosely deemed “stallion pedigrees,” and current fashion can influence those purchases almost as much as pure racetrack results. Simon: Taking a gamble on next hot new sire

DRF | 8 years ago
Buyers have every reason to be skeptical of young sires when looking for a racing prospect, because it's hard to predict whether a sire will succeed. But that does not prevent buyers from gravitating toward young sires. There's nothing more exciting to a potential racehorse owner than an unproven sire, a blank canvas of potential limited only by the imagination. Read More...

Simon: Feast or famine for consignors in current auction climate

DRF | 8 years ago
The stock market is near an all-time high, purses on average have never been better, and handle on racing is finally showing stability after years of declines. These factors should have positively affected the commercial auction market for racing prospects; instead, Fasig-Tipton Kentucky's yearling sale last Tuesday cast a wet blanket on things. The sale recorded an unusually high 37.5 percent buyback rate, total receipts were down, the average price was down, and the median price declined. Read More...

Tapit in familiar spot atop sires list

DRF | 8 years ago
Through the first two legs of the Triple Crown, the stories told were of freshman phenom Uncle Mo, whose scores of stakes performers from his first crop include Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist, and of young classic juggernaut Curlin, whose latest top runner is Preakness Stakes winner Exaggerator. Suspiciously quiet was Tapit, as North America's two-time reigning leading sire failed to record a placing with three individual starters in those two races. Read More...
