Jon & Joel join Brisnet handicapper Ed Derosa to break down the power trio – Union Rags, El Padrino & Take Charge Indy – that has taken their talents to South Beach for a heavyweight showdown in Saturday’s Florida Derby (G1). Can Union Rags remain the Kentucky Derby favorite? Also in the Big Easy, there’s a Final Four matchup between Mark Valeski, Cigar Street, Z Dager & Rousing Sermon on Sunday. Who will advance? Watch it. Comment.

TCI Top Ten with top speed rating

Rank Name Bris Comments
1 Union Rags 103 Clear-cut Derby favorite has yet to show many weaknesses
2 Creative Cause 107 Back on track as California’s top 3yo after strong San Felipe win
3 El Padrino 111 Logical move to now run in FL Derby as Pletcher’s first-stringer
4 Hansen 105 Staying home for Blue Grass makes sense for the champ
5 Bodemeister 102 Predicament: SA Derby is home, but Ark Derby may be easier
6 Gemologist 98 Comeback was as good as you could have wanted; Wood next
7 Alpha 100 Wood-bound after all, which should provide a good class test
8 Take Charge Indy 109 Curiously passed on easier Tampa Derby for harder FL Derby
9 Dullahan 98 Good return on turf will set him up perfectly for G1 Blue Grass
10 Paynter 93 Illinois Derby next; Talented colt trying to buck history

Joel – I believe that Union Rags will get the 1 1/8 and beat El Padrino today in the Florida Derby. I see Take Charge Indy, News Pending, and Neck and neck battling for the third and 4th place spots.

Joe, Union Rags fans now get a better price on Derby day after that loss! ..so don’t get off of the train just yet… 😉

Great ride by Calvin to steal it on the lead…while Castellano was clearly riding to pin Union Rags in…and Leparoux was clearly riding to use the FL Derby as a prep for the KY Derby more so than trying to show more early speed and win the race.

El Padrino may have bounced off of his big stretch battle in the Risen Star down that long stretch, and I still like Union Rags and the way he finished and galloped out…still the Derby fave IMO

Can’t believe you missed the pick in Louisiana Derby.

    • Joel Cunningham

Ha! I hope you had it Rmurov! 🙂

It’s odd that the La. Derby winner is unlikely to make the KY Derby now…and Mark Valeski is also now in jeopardy by graded earnings! Yikes!

That track at FG hasnt been the same ever since that flood a couple weeks back…playing too fast and very typey…a lot of upsets and a lot of records being set!
