BALTIMORE — There may not be a more inscrutable race on Saturday’s program at Pimlico than the Grade 3, $100,000 Maryland Sprint Handicap. There are no standouts in its 10-horse field.

Ravalo, an 8-year-old gelding, won this race in 2009 and was third in 2010. However, he has not started since finishing last in an overnight stakes at Aqueduct in January, from which he emerged with a quarter crack and then a bruised foot.

Threatening the 1 1/16-mile track record, Trickmeister ($4.80) bounced back from an off-the-board finish in the Donn Handicap to wire Thursday's $88,200 Vanlandingham overnight stakes at Belmont Park over troubled even-money favorite Stay Thirsty.

Trickmeister broke alertly under Ramon Dominguez to quickly clear his four rivals, rolled through fractions of 23.23 seconds, 45.72, and 1:09.50 while racing in the two path, repelled a final try from Stay Thirsty in deep stretch after a mile in 1:33.58, and reached the wire 1 1/2 lengths in front.

There is no shortage of star power racing this weekend in the harness world. Nearly every top 3-year-old pacer in North America is racing at one track or another.

The colt division is lead by last year's champion rookie Sweet Lou. The World Record holder for 2-year-olds (1:49) will start in one of three $105k-plus Pennsylvania Sire Stakes divisions at Pocono Downs on Saturday evening. The Ron Burke trainee will start from post five as the 5-2 morning line choice in race 12 on the 16-race program but seems likely to head behind the gate at 3-5 or lower.
