Could Trappe Shot emerge as a Preakness contender?

by Joel Cunningham 5 years ago

Trappe Shot took another big step towards stakes company with a 12 3/4-length romp in an entry-level allowance race Mar. 21st at Gulfstream. It marked the talented colt’s second win in as many starts by a combined 23 lengths, as he broke his maiden on Feb. 21st by 10 1/4 lengths at the Miami oval.

An $850,000 sale-topping 2-year-old a year ago, Trappe Shot has a strong pedigree for the Classics, hailing from the second crop of top sire Tapit. He is also out of the Grade 1-producing mare Shopping, who is the dam of Miss Shop, a Grade 1 winner at 10 furlongs. Seemingly pointed for the April 24 Withers (G3) at a mile at Aqueduct, can Trappe Shot do what champion Bernardini did in 2006 — go from Gulfstream, to the Withers, and then win the Preakness? Good look at a horse that is under the regular racing media radar, but will have a big impact in the 3yo division come summertime. Seeing him win the other day reminded me of Curlin’s big win at GP before Jess Jackson bought him.

If im the owner, i put the horse in the wood. the horses win was effortless. i dont think theres much to lose by having the horse try two turns now. No one can possibly tell how good the horse might be and a kentucky derby contender comes along rarely.

I like your spirit! But I think the modern-day mentality would see that as being too stiff of an assignment for him to face Eskendereya and Awesome Act at 1 1/8 miles on a couple weeks rest while never having run past 6 1/2 furlongs.

The word is D’Funnybone is also pointing toward the Withers, so Trappe Shot should get a good class test facing one of the top one-turn horses of this crop. I could actually see Trappe Shot losing the G3 Withers and still running well in the Preakness because I really feel like this colt is going to appreciate the two turns.
