ARCADIA, Calif. (March 27, 2013)—Consistent Doinghardtimeagain and upstart Sweet Marini head a field 11 California-bred 3-year-old fillies going 6 ½ furlongs in Saturday’s $200,000 Evening Jewel Stakes.

Trained by Jerry Hollendorfer, Doinghardtimeagain comes off a sharp second going 6 ½ furlongs down the hillside turf course against open company in the $81,000 Sweet Life Stakes on Feb. 16. A winner from off the pace of the seven furlong Soviet Problem Stakes versus statebreds on Dec. 9 at Betfair Hollywood Park, Doinghardtimeagain was second in the $250,000 Cal Cup Juvenile Fillies going 1 1/16 miles on Oct. 13—her second career start.

A daughter of Ministers Wildcat, she is owned by her breeders, Tommy Town Thoroughbreds LLC. Her record stands at 6-2-3-0, with earnings of $236,270.

Sold privately following a sensational first-out maiden special weight win versus Cal-breds on Nov. 4, Sweet Marini need only run back to her debut, in which she earned a 93 Beyer Speed figure, to rate a big chance in the Evening Jewel.

Originally trained by Jorge Gutierrez, Sweet Marini is now conditioned by Bob Baffert and is owned by Kaleem Shah, Inc. A rousing 5 ¼ length winner at odds of 10-1, Sweet Marini ran six furlongs in 1:09.40 and has trained smartly for Baffert since, evidenced by a six furlong move from the gate in 1:11.80 on March 18 at Santa Anita.

A winner of the Golden Gate Debutante on Dec. 1, the Steve Specht-trained Marks Mine comes off a close second-place finish as the favorite in the 1 1/16 miles California Oaks at Golden Gate Fields on Feb. 9.

Like Doinhardtimeagain, Marks Mine has been a gem of consistency, evidenced by the fact she has been no worse than third in seven career starts. Owned and bred by Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams, the daughter of Benchmark appears on-edge, as she drilled five furlongs from the gate on March 21 in 1:00.40, best of 18 drills that morning at Golden Gate.

In her initial foray to Southern California on Jan. 26, she made the lead early and ran a big third in the $300,000 Cal Breeders Champion Stakes going one mile. Her overall mark stands at 7-3-2-2 and she has earnings of $145,150.
