by TCI 4 years ago

It’s that time. The TCI guys provide a brief analysis of six major Breeders’ Cup races – Classic, Distaff, Turf, Mile, Dirt Mile, and Juvenile – in this special selections show. Who’s the most likely winner? Which favorite is most vulnerable? Who’s the best bet? Which 30-1 shot has a real chance of lighting up the tote board?

Hi Joel – An action packed Saturday Breeders Cup Card, that’s for sure. Glad to say that I hit the Exacta with MMM/WTC in the classic. This win salvaged my betting day. It could have been a very big winning day for me. If the Fugue holds on in the Turf, I would have hit a pick 3 and Late Pick 4 and 5/6 consolation payout for pick 6. I had Secret Circle in my Late Pick 4, but did not include him in my pick 6. Wish I would have because for $20 more I could have hit the 5/6 Pick 6 consolation. The race that deflated my day was when She’s a Tiger was DQ by the stewards. If she wins, then I would have hit the early pick 4. Impressive win by New Years Day in the Juvenile. Game effort by Havana and Strong Mandate, in spite of their poor PP draw. Time to look ahead to the 2014 KY Derby. My current top 3 for the Derby: #1 New Year’s Day. #2 Honor Code #3 Strong Mandate. What’s your early top 3 Joel?

Hey Joe, glad your day was salvaged! The horse that saved me on most tickets I cashed happened to be Magician, ironically…the horse had no real form to go by for the Turf, but because he had won a Group 1 easily earlier this year I had to use his potential talent because I wasn’t going to allow O’Brien/Coolmore to beat me in a grass race. Really made my whole day, despite really not liking or knowing what to make of him in the Turf.

I did not think either of the Juvenile races were very strong again for the second consecutive year. I do, however, believe New Year’s Day is one whose future is in from of him, and he seems to want at least 1 1/8 miles.

Off the top of my head, an early Top 3 for me would include: Honor Code, Tap It Rich, and Strong Mandate. I have not like Strong Mandate lately because he’s a big colt who ran hard the last couple of months. I think if given the chance to come along at the right pace, he could be an even better 3yo when you look at his physique and pedigree. Tap It Rich looks freakish, he just wasn’t mentally ready for last Saturday. He’ll be better next year IMO. And finally Honor Code, who we’ll learn more about in the Remsen..he faces a pretty nice colt in Cairo Prince. But I think Honor Code is the real deal and should also improve with age and distance.
